WASHINGTON — Egg prices in the United States have dropped significantly in 2025, easing consumer costs and bolstering the Trump administration’s efforts to curb inflation, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Wholesale egg prices fell to approximately $3.27 per dozen by March 21, down from a peak of $8.53 earlier this year, a nearly 50% decline. Retail prices have also decreased, averaging $5.90 per dozen in February, down from a record high of $6.23 in March. The decline follows a recovery in egg supply after a severe outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and strategic interventions by the USDA.

Since 2022, HPAI has led to the culling of over 168 million birds, including 30 million in 2025 alone. However, fewer outbreaks were reported this spring, allowing egg inventories to rebound and reducing shortages. Weaker post-Easter demand has further contributed to the price drop.

The Trump administration’s $1 billion initiative, announced in February, has played a key role. The plan allocates $500 million for biosecurity measures, $400 million for financial relief to affected farmers, and $100 million for vaccine research. It also includes efforts to reduce regulatory burdens and facilitate temporary egg imports, with Turkey committing to supply 420 million eggs in 2025.

Lower egg prices are providing relief to American households and businesses. Eggs, a staple protein, are more affordable, easing grocery budgets strained by a 36.8% price increase from December 2023 to December 2024. Restaurants, which faced “egg surcharges” during peak prices, are also benefiting. However, prices remain higher than last year due to ongoing feed costs and cage-free mandates in states like California.

The USDA’s biosecurity and import strategies could further stabilize prices, boosting consumer confidence and economic stability. Rollins’ leadership underscores the administration’s commitment to affordable food, marking a tangible policy achievement.

Rollins has ushered in major wins for the Administration by developing an “egg strategy” that wins for American families.  She has also built a team of unconventional advocates like community farmer and civil rights leader Dr. Alveda King.
