Since 1939, Planned Parenthood and its supporters have had a target on the backs of Black women and their babies. Through Margaret Sangers’ Negro Project, they have paid Black men and women of influence, including ministers and politicians, to promote birth control, sterilization and abortion as instruments of “freedom” that facilitate “reproductive justice”. However not everyone has believed this false narrative, and many have fought, sometimes alone, against Planned Parenthood’s stronghold in the Black community.
Bevelyn Beatty Williams is one such champion. On July 25, 2024, she was sentenced to 41 months in prison for blocking the door to Planned Parenthood’s flagship location on Bleeker Street in New York City. Bevelyn’s sentence is excessive. No pro-abortion protester has been jailed for attacking the more than 80 pregnancy centers that provide women with services at no cost. In fact, Merrick Garland, stated that those protesting abortion centers do so in the light of day when it is easy to see who they are, while those vandalizing and fire-bombing pregnancy centers that provide free STI testing, ultrasounds and other services, do so at night.
For years, more Black babies have been aborted than born in New York City. In 2020, Planned Parenthood admitted to being a systemically racist organization and acknowledged their contribution to historical reproductive harm within communities of color. Seventy-nine percent of Planned Parenthood’s facilities have been and remain in black and Latino neighborhoods. Bevelyn understands that Planned Parenthood’s abortion trajectory has succeeded in decimating the black community. In protest of the Negro Project and the reproductive harm caused by abortion, she used her body to block the doors, preventing abortion workers from entering.
Some may view her incarceration as justified, but is it? True justice does not demand that Black women continue to allow the wholesale slaughter of Black infants in the womb in the name of “reproductive justice”. True justice demands restitution from Planned Parenthood and all the corporations, foundations, businesses, and individuals great and small who have contributed to the targeting of Black women Planned Parenthood has done since abortion was legalized in America.
The Black Pro-life Coalition invites you to protest the incarceration of Bevelyn Williams in three ways. First, join us in standing up for Black women and their babies by signing the demand for restitution Second, find the closest Planned Parenthood facility near you and join us in praying outside the facility for one hour beginning 6 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2024 and every Thursday thereafter until Bevelyn is freed. Third, join us in stopping the destruction of yet another beautiful Black family by sending a contribution to https://www.givesendgo.com/BevelynBeattyWilliams to assist in defraying the costs of her appeal.
If you are a woman who understands the hour we are in, please take a stand with The Restoration Project. The lives of Black women and their babies are depending on you to stop the deliberate targeting Planned Parenthood has done since 1939.
Catherine Davis is the Founder and President of The Restoration Project. She often partners with the National Black Prolife Coalition, the Network of Politically Active Christians, and the Frederick Douglas Foundation in an ongoing effort to educate Americans about the issues that are impacting the Black community.
