WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate today confirmed Andrew Hughes as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a critical leadership role as the Trump administration prioritizes affordable housing, community restoration, and innovative public land use. Hughes will serve as HUD’s Chief Operating Officer, working closely with Secretary Scott Turner to advance HUD’s mission of fostering strong, sustainable communities and promoting economic opportunity for all Americans.

With a proven track record in both government and the private sector, Hughes brings a common-sense approach to addressing HUD’s priorities. These include expanding affordable housing, partnering with the Department of the Interior to responsibly reimagine public lands, and supporting communities devastated by natural disasters such as wildfires and floods. His experience equips him to navigate complex challenges and deliver results that uplift rural, tribal, and urban communities alike.

In press posts from the Department of Housing and Urban Development , HUD Secretary Scott Turner said:

“Andrew Hughes is a servant leader and is the right person, at the right time for this assignment to carry out HUD’s mission. I had the pleasure of serving alongside him during the first Trump administration and witnessed firsthand his leadership, wisdom, and love for this country. We share a clear vision for HUD’s future, and it is truly a blessing to have him in this role. He will serve the American people well.”

Hughes' dedication to all communities is evident in his remarks from HUD:

“Serving at HUD is more than a job - it's a calling. I’m humbled to help lead an agency that expands opportunity for all communities - rural, tribal, and urban. Together, under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Turner, we’re focused on ensuring more Americans can achieve not just housing, but the stability, self-sufficiency, and upward mobility that define the American Dream.”

Hughes previously served as HUD Chief of Staff under Secretaries Ben Carson and Scott Turner, earning praise for his leadership. His nomination received strong support from former Secretary Carson, Senator Tim Scott, Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, and numerous housing and community development organizations. On April 10, 2025, Hughes testified before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, outlining his vision for HUD’s future. His full testimony is available online.

As the youngest Deputy Secretary in HUD’s history, Hughes is poised to drive impactful change, ensuring HUD’s operations align with the administration’s goals of restoring communities and expanding opportunity for all.
