WASHINGTON / November 22 / BPALiveWire - A 2024 study from the Nurses’ Health Study followed nearly 50000 women and found that those with the highest gratitude levels had a 9 percent lower risk of death over four years. The causes included heart disease, cancer and other major illnesses. Researchers say gratitude cuts stress hormones, lowers inflammation, boosts sleep and encourages exercise and healthy eating.
Dee Dee Bass Wilbon, reporting from the National Mall, explained that giving thanks for rights most of the world lacks makes the benefits even stronger.
Appreciating civic freedoms builds purpose and belonging. Both factors predict mental strength and life satisfaction better than almost anything else.
According to Dr. Joyce Drayton, “Gratitude literally changes how the body functions.” Drayton explained that when people feel genuine thanks, the brain releases serotonin and dopamine. These natural chemicals stabilize mood and quiet the brain’s distress centers. At the same time, gratitude shifts the nervous system into rest-and-repair mode. Blood pressure drops, inflammation decreases and the immune system grows stronger. Drayton stresses that gratitude does far more than lift spirits. It actively helps the body heal and protects overall health.
As the nation enters Thanksgiving season, Wilbon spoke with visitors on the National Mall who were grateful for the blessings that come from being American. While America is not perfect, honest gratitude for rare blessings, even gratitude for the blessings of liberty, might trigger real changes in mind and body that help people live longer and happier lives.
