Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom, marking a pivotal moment in America’s journey toward fulfilling its founding promise that all people are created equal and endowed by God with inherent dignity and rights.
While rooted in African American history, Juneteenth is a day for all Americans to celebrate. It serves as a reminder of the nation’s progress toward its highest ideals and the ongoing work of ensuring freedom and opportunity for every citizen.
“Juneteenth reminds us that we are one blood, one human race, called to live together in freedom and unity,” said Dr. Alveda King. “It is a day to celebrate how far we’ve come and recommit ourselves to the principles that make this nation exceptional.”
The Kennedy Center event brings together leaders and artists whose lives and work reflect those values. Dr. King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has long advocated for reconciliation and human dignity. Dr. Ben Carson and Candy Carson have dedicated their careers to expanding opportunity and strengthening communities. Wintley Phipps, known around the world for his inspiring music and ministry, will help commemorate the occasion through song.
At a time when Americans often focus on their differences, Juneteenth offers an opportunity to reflect on the values that unite the nation: freedom, equality, faith, perseverance, and respect for the dignity of every person. It also reminds us that a healthy society can acknowledge disagreements while remaining committed to a shared future.
As Americans gather to commemorate this important milestone, the Kennedy Center’s Juneteenth celebration will honor the progress that has been made while encouraging citizens to continue working together to advance the ideals that have guided the nation since its founding.
The event is free and open to the public.
