SPLC's Fall from Grace: From Civil Rights Champion to Purveyors of Racism

WASHINGTON / June 9, 2026 / BPALiveWire The House Committee on the Judiciary recently held a hearing examining the Southern Poverty Law Center's (SPLC) role in fomenting division and hate in America. Once revered as a bulwark against extremism, the SPLC now faces sharp criticism for straying from its original mission.

Two things remain clear. First, the SPLC was founded with honorable intentions. Emerging from the civil rights struggles of the South, it sought to combat genuine racism, poverty, and injustice through legal advocacy and monitoring. Second, the organization has profoundly lost its way.

Republicans at the hearing argued that the SPLC has gone so far as to pay individuals who advanced white supremacist causes. The SPLC defends these actions as standard infiltration tactics to expose and dismantle racist groups. Critics counter that the approach backfired. Infiltrators appeared more effective at burning crosses and recruiting members than gathering actionable intelligence, ultimately amplifying the very hatred they claimed to fight.

More troubling is the SPLC’s broadening of its “hate” label to include mainstream religious convictions. The organization has placed individuals and groups on watchlists simply for publicly affirming the Judeo-Christian belief about homosexuality. These Christians explicitly reject violence, harm, or the denial of basic rights to anyone. They simply decline to celebrate or champion homosexuality. This stance has led to Dr. Alveda King, a prominent civil rights activist and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., appearing in multiple SPLC “Anti-LGBT Roundup” articles. These roundups highlighted her pro-life work, traditional views on marriage, and associations with organizations like the Family Research Council.

Tragic consequences have followed when SPLC labels Christian organizations hate groups. On August 15, 2012, Floyd Lee Corkins entered the Family Research Council headquarters armed with a pistol. He shot security guard Leo Johnson before being subdued. Corkins later told the FBI he targeted the organization based on the SPLC’s hate group list.

The SPLC’s strategy extends beyond labeling. Rather than engaging ideological opponents in open debate—the essence of the marketplace of ideas—it seeks their elimination from public life. Ryan Bangert, Senior Vice President, Strategic Initiatives & Special Counsel to the President at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), testified on this point.

He said, “Corporate cancellations of ADF based on the SPLC’s smear campaign provide a small glimpse of the massive harm caused by their targeting." AmazonSmile terminated ADF from the program in 2018, explicitly referencing the SPLC’s ‘hate group’ list. Microsoft/TechSoup removed ADF’s access. Pantheon stopped renewing its contract. And Fidelity Charitable blocked or conditioned anonymous donations to ADF.”

During the hearing, Dr. Alveda King challenged the SPLC directly, urging it to admit it has strayed and repent, citing the late George Wallace’s transformation from segregationist to one seeking redemption.

In her remarks to the committee, King emphasized unity. She said, “We are, as Scripture teaches and as science testifies, one blood and one human race. And if we remember that truth, we can build a future worthy of the sacrifices made by those who came before us. We must speak out for truth and against the forces that would manufacture hate, division and violence – simply to line their pockets and further their political ambitions!”

By fearing robust ideas and resorting to deplatforming, the SPLC has undermined its own legacy. A healthy marketplace of ideas thrives when stocked with perspectives from both left and right. Silencing dissent through financial pressure and reputational destruction does not defeat hate—it breeds resentment and erodes trust. The SPLC must rediscover its founding principles of justice and truth if it hopes to reclaim moral authority.
