San Antonio / March 11, 2026 / BPALiveWire - Texas families now have a powerful new opportunity to shape their children’s education through the Texas Education Freedom Accounts program, an initiative designed to expand access to learning options and put parents firmly in the driver’s seat.

The program, often referred to as TEFA, allows eligible families to use state-supported education funds for a wide range of educational needs including private school tuition, homeschool curriculum, tutoring services and specialized learning resources. For many parents, the program represents a meaningful shift toward greater flexibility and choice.

Applications for the 2026–27 school year opened Feb. 4 and will close March 17 at 11:59 p.m. Central time. Families can apply through the official state website, educationfreedom.texas.gov, where they can also review eligibility requirements and find detailed guidance on completing the process.

The application itself is designed to be straightforward. Parents must confirm Texas residency and eligibility to attend a public or charter school, gather documentation such as proof of residency and student identification and complete the online application through the state’s Odyssey portal. One application covers all eligible children in a household and typically takes about 10 to 20 minutes to complete.

While funding prioritizes certain groups including lower-income families and children with disabilities, every eligible Texas family can apply. If applications exceed available funding, the state will allocate funds through a lottery system within priority tiers.

Advocates say the program opens doors for families who have long sought more educational flexibility.

“At the Frederick Douglass Foundation, we are working to make sure that all students have the life changing opportunity that education freedom accounts offer,” said Jullianna Jennings, program director for the Frederick Douglass Foundation. “Programs like the Texas Education Freedom Accounts give parents more choices and help ensure every child has access to the learning environment that best supports their future.”

After the March 17 deadline, the state will begin notifying participants in early April. Families will then select schools or learning settings during the summer enrollment window. Initial funding is expected to become available July 1, giving families time to prepare for the upcoming school year.

For many Texans, the program reflects a broader commitment to expanding educational access while recognizing the central role parents play in their children’s education.

As Jennings noted, the opportunity is significant but the timeline is short.

“This is a life changing opportunity for families,” she said. “If you are eligible, take the time to apply before the deadline.”
