NASHVILLE, July 12, 2023 /BPALiveWire/ Tennessee State University is set to achieve a significant milestone as it becomes the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to introduce men's ice hockey at the collegiate level.

The move to incorporate ice hockey aligns with TSU's dedication to offering new avenues for growth in fields that may have traditionally been less accessible. TSU President Glenda Glover highlights the university's aim to broaden students' horizons.

TSU Hockey is poised to inaugurate its debut season in 2024, marking a significant turning point for the university. While starting as a club-level initiative, aspirations exist for achieving NCAA Division I status for both men's and women's teams in the future. While specific timelines for achieving varsity NCAA status have not been defined, TSU is committed to building a strong foundation for sustainable success.

This historic collaboration sees Tennessee State University partnering with the National Hockey League (NHL, NHLPA) and the Nashville Predators.

The institution is actively recruiting a Director of Hockey Operations. In the interim, assistant athletic director Nick Guerriero will oversee hockey-related inquiries. Guerriero expresses enthusiasm for the journey ahead, aiming to promote excellence in collegiate hockey.

This venture into collegiate ice hockey represents a significant moment for both Tennessee State University and the broader HBCU community. By breaking down barriers and creating fresh prospects, TSU Hockey seeks to establish a lasting legacy of inclusivity, excellence, and athletic achievement. The support of the NHL, NHLPA, Nashville Predators and College Hockey Inc. will serve to strengthen the universities' programs and present a model for other HBCUs to expand their athletic programs beyond the norm.
